New ANSI Standards for Mobile Elevating Work Platforms to Publish Next Week

The long-awaited updated ANSI A92 standards regarding the design, safe use and training standards of mobile elevating work platforms are set to be published in the United States Dec. 10, with an effective date of December 2019.

The International Powered Access Federation has issued comprehensive guidance to help companies and individuals to identify key changes, to understand their responsibilities and to begin planning compliance.

Four IPAF white papers identify key changes to terminology and definitions, requirements for owners and operators, guidance and requirements on risk assessments, equipment familiarization and requirements for operator and supervisor and manager training that will affect all manufacturers, dealers, owners and users of aerial equipment.

Corresponding changes in Canada, known as the CSA B354 standards, were published in 2017 and came into effect May 2018.

“While we still await the publication of the ANSI A92 standards, their Canadian counterparts have now been in effect for some months,” said Tony Groat, IPAF’s North America manager, who sits on drafting committees for both the ANSI and CSA standards. “It is very important that all owners and users of MEWPs be aware of the key changes in these updated standards and implement plans to become compliant if they haven’t already.”
