The widespread devastation and dramatic impact of Hurricane Katrina on the city of New Orleans, La., in August 2005 left such a mark that, ultimately, The Rental Show, planned for The Big Easy in February of the following year, had to be moved in the 11th hour to Las Vegas, the city that has hosted it for three of the past six years. With stops in Orlando, Fla., and a couple in Atlanta along the way, 2012 marks the return of the American Rental Association's Rental Show to Nawlins, The Crescent City, The Big Easy, NOLA or, as it is also known, New Orleans.

The 2012 Rental Show, Feb. 5-8 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, will include new and expanded educational opportunities, events including an evening at Mardi Gras World and a keynote address from Aron Ralston, the subject of the Academy Award-nominated film “127 Hours.”

The 2012 show will offer 30 seminars on Feb. 5, 7 and 8, including new indoor/outdoor half-day product demonstration sessions. New events include Crescent City Carnival on Feb. 7, which will be held at Mardi Gras World where most of the floats, sculptures and props for the parades held during Mardi Gras are conceived and produced. ARA's Crescent City Carnival will feature a behind-the-scenes look at the floats and how they're created, with live entertainment, networking, food and beverages. Also new for 2012 is An Evening for ARAPAC, an event for ARA's political action committee on Feb. 6 at the National World War II Museum where invited guests will be able to tour the displays and exhibits.

In addition to many networking and education opportunities, dozens of new products will be introduced on the trade show floor in the convention center. RER previews just a few on the following pages. For more products, visit rermag.com. To visit the RER staff at the show, stop by Booth 6617.

Snorkel

Snorkel will showcase its A62JRT, a 62-foot platform height articulated boom built on the company's common Polaris chassis, at The Rental Show. The Polaris chassis is designed to deliver the best inside turning radius of any two-wheel-steer machine in its class, and offers very compact stowed dimensions for transport. The oscillating front axle, with hydrostatic four-wheel drive, keeps all four tires in contact with the ground, and works whether the machine is stowed or elevated. “We had originally intended to focus solely on our compact electric lifts at ARA, which proved a successful strategy last year,” said Richard Tindale, global sales & marketing director. “However, the feedback from the [Lift & Access] Showcase on the A62JRT was so positive that we have decided to take it to New Orleans.”

Solutions by Computer

Solutions by Computer introduces its Card Payment Gateway, a payment processing module for credit and debit cards that gives Enfinity system users the option of three different payment processing vendors to choose from. Benefits to rental operators include non-proprietary integration with flexibility to shop three payment processors for competitive quotes and customer service capabilities; PCI-compliance — no card information is stored on Enfinity, which removes the system from the scope of PCI requirements; signature capture automatically applies to both card and contract; the card is automatically used for subsequent invoices on the same contract; and settlements are processed automatically overnight.

Genie

Genie introduces three new rough-terrain electric scissorlifts designed to increase operator efficiencies both indoors and outdoors. The new models — GS-2669 DC, GS-3369 DC and GS-4069 DC — offer similar increased capacity and jobsite performance to that of Genie's RT family, but now in an electric model. The GS-4069 DC scissor is a 40-foot full-drive-height electric scissorlift — the first at that height in its class, according to the maker. The other two models also offer the full-drive-height feature. The electric-drive motors provide emissions-free performance in enclosed buildings and can be charged overnight so that lifts are ready to go the next morning.

Little Beaver

Little Beaver's new HYD-NTV11H UN-Towable Drill is engineered to provide a transportable solution to one-man hole-digging projects. Unlike similar units that offer a 9-hp engine, the NTV11H is built with an 11-hp HondaGX340V engine, resulting in a 10-percent increased power advantage over competitive models. Hydraulic pressure of 2,500 psi and an operating speed of 150 rpm further enhance power output, the maker says. The unit is well suited for use by landscapers, fence and sign installation, and park and recreation departments.

General Equipment Co.

General Equipment Co. introduces the CTS12 Rip-R-Stripper for floor-covering removal projects, offering a fresh solution to removing ceramic tile, hardwood floor and other tough floor coverings. It also allows rental operators to make more revenue from the electric-powered breakers in their inventories. The CTS12 acts as a tool carrier for electric-powered breakers with ratings between 30 and 45 foot-pounds of force. The CTS12 provides a direct-impulse force, which supplies adequate power to break through the high bond strengths of today's mastics, glues and thin-set materials.

General Pipe Cleaners

General Pipe Cleaners JM-2900 Jet-Set gas-powered water jet is an economical alternative to larger water jets. It has the power to quickly clear grease, sand and ice in 4- to 8-inch drain lines. The JM-2900 is lighter and more maneuverable, yet maintains the same pressure and flow rate as other jets in its class. The unit is driven by a 13-hp Honda engine connected directly to a 3,000-psi, 4-gpm triplex pump. Vibra-pulse helps the hose slide around tight bends in small lines and down long runs. A 200-foot-capacity hose reel with reel brake is mounted on a heavy-duty frame with two pneumatic tires. Safety features include a thermal relief valve to protect the pump from heat damage, along with a backflow check valve and inlet filter.
