Volvo Penta has joined forces with power solutions manufacturer e-power to deliver a Battery Energy Storage System tailored for the rental sector, for one of Europe’s largest construction rental companies, Boels Rental. At the core of the collaboration is Volvo Penta’s BESS subsystem: a scalable, adaptable solution with an integration-ready architecture that enables faster time to market and application-specific flexibility.

Boels Rental is utilizing a BESS powered by Volvo Penta in its operations. Developed and integrated by e-power using Volvo Penta’s purpose-built BESS subsystem, it features a compact design that balances high-energy density battery packs with transportability, critical for rental operations. Whether supporting electric machinery or supplementing on-site power needs, the unit is optimized for flexible deployment and reliable performance.

Volvo Penta’s BESS subsystem forms the complete DC backbone of the system, comprising battery packs, Battery Management System, electrical safety components, DC/DC converters, thermal management, and communication interfaces. Its integration-ready architecture enables OEMs like e-power to adapt and scale systems to customer-specific needs with speed and precision.

“This is about enabling our partners to move faster and more confidently toward sustainable solutions,” said David Hamilton, Volvo Penta industrial sales director for Northern Europe. “By combining our adaptable BESS subsystem with e-power’s integration expertise, we’re helping Boels meet both operational flexibility and decarbonization goals.”

Boels Rental, already a long-time user of e-power generators powered by Volvo Penta engines, continues its journey toward electrification and sustainability. “We’re seeing a shift in demand from our customers and a clear path in our sustainability ambitions,” said Boels manager of fleet & innovation Davy De Wilde. “That’s why we work with trusted partners like e-power and Volvo Penta – because we know they deliver performance, reliability, and innovation.”

For e-power, the project reflects the next evolution in power solutions. “We’ve built our reputation on reliability and efficient power systems,” says e-power business support director Jens Fets. “Working again with Volvo Penta, this time on battery energy storage, allows us to meet the growing demand for energy in a silent, low-emissions, compact and mobile design – especially in rental applications.”
