West Bend, Wis.-based Gehl Co. last week said it will lay off nearly 18 percent of its salaried workforce, consisting of 62 salaried employees and 19 hourly employees, according to The Business Journal of Milwaukee.

The cuts, the company says, are in response to the softening U.S. economy and a slump in construction equipment sales.

The 62 affected salaried employees are based at the company’s West Bend headquarters, while the hourly employees are based out of Gehl’s factory in Madison, S.D.
