Power generation and temperature control rental provider Aggreko was awarded an ISO energy reduction certificate for its efforts to lower its carbon footprint.

Aggreko’s Northern European business is one of only 100 companies worldwide to achieve CEMARS (Carbon and Energy Management Reduction) - the first global greenhouse gas certification scheme to be accredited to the internationally recognized ISO 14065 standard. Aggreko is reported to be the only equipment rental company to be recognized with CEMARS.

The U.K. business has replaced more than 6 percent of its car fleet with electric vehicles this year as part of its commitment to reducing its impact on the environment.

“We’re delighted to have met the stretching targets and achieved this certification,” said Martin Williams, Aggreko’s head of Quality Health Safety & Environment, for Northern Europe. “We’ve taken positive steps over the past four years, since joining the scheme, to reduce our carbon footprint. We all have a part to play, and I’m very proud that our great people are leading these efforts by choosing electric vehicles.”

Aggreko has also been recognised by Go Ultra Low – a joint-funded government and automotive campaign to raise awareness and encourage businesses to run low-emissions vehicles.

Other initiatives implemented by Aggreko in its regional depots, services centers and offices, include fitting energy efficient and automatically controlled lighting and automated roller shutters to regulate and maintain ambient temperatures.

“Some of these initiatives cost us more as a company, but they are the right thing to do if they bring benefits to our people, and to our planet,” said Williams. “We are constantly looking at ways to reduce our impact and it’s very gratifying to know that we are leading the world again – not just in the energy with bring through the power, heating and cooling we produce, but also in the way we operate behind the scenes.”

The certification was enabled through the Achilles Carbon Reduction Programme, which helps businesses demonstrate they are taking action to measure, manage and reduce their energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Earlier this year Aggreko acquired Younicos, a global market leader in the development and deployment of integrated energy systems, based on battery storage, to complement its renewable energy rental business.
