Speedy Hire, the U.K.’s largest equipment rental company, has named the Towerlight VT-1 Eco lighting tower winner of its inaugural Product Innovation of the Year award.

Speedy’s judges cited the unit’s energy efficiency features, including intelligent sensors that automatically switch the lights on and off depending on engine brightness levels. The light tower was launched in the U.K. at the start of 2010.

Tests have shown that the 12 VT-1 Eco can create operator time, fuel and carbon savings of more than £4,300 (about U.S. $6,833) per month on an average jobsite.

Speedy launched the award earlier this year as part of its overall sustainability strategy, which includes the Green Option (GO) initiative, which provides customers with independently verified energy efficiency data on certain products.

“As the leading equipment rental services provider, we see it as our responsibility to make a product like this available to customers as well as to encourage manufacturers to develop innovative new designs,” said Andy Conner, Speedy supply chain director.

Speedy Hire is based in Newton-le-Willows, Merseyside, U.K.
