For those who might have missed it, we recently presented the top winners of RER’s annual Innovative Product Award. The Gold Award went to Doosan Bobcat for the MAXControl iOS Remote Control for Bobcat Loaders. Description (provided by the manufacturer): “Doosan Portable Power has expanded the Intelligent Load Management System (ILMS) option across its full generator product line, including small to mid-size generator models – the G25, G50, G70, G125 and G150.

The internally packaged ILMS option improves machine performance and decreases potential downtime associated with Tier 4-compliant mobile generators in light load and fluctuating demand applications.

The ILMS option automatically adjusts the engine and exhaust temperature with supplemental heat to ensure the generator operates at full capacity regardless of load demands. Doosan Portable Power designed ILMS technology can eliminate the potential for wet-stacking and the associated damage and performance issues it can cause for diesel generators.

The system requires no operator control or monitoring. It is compatible with any voltage output produced by the generator, meeting the needs of a variety of applications with no special setup or switching required.

The ILMS technology reduces fuel costs compared with other methods of adding supplemental load. It’s an ideal option for Doosan generators used in rental applications where load demands are either unknown or incorrectly sized. For applications with fluctuating power demands, the system can instantly respond to ensure full generator capacity is always available in the event of a sudden heavy load demand, such as a motor start.”  

RER commentary: Doosan Portable Power’s Intelligent Load Management System is a response to an industry wide problem driven by Tier IV Final engines, and emission requirements.

“All of the engine suppliers have made changes, and modifications to their engines to add components and what happens in the power generation industry is a lot of times the generators are underutilized and not running at their full capacity,” says Travis George, product manager, generators and light towers. “The problem with that is when it’s cold outside or when the generator is under-utilized, there’s not enough heat in the system and the new components that the engine manufacturers have put on the engine end up being a failure point.

“So we’ve developed an option called the Intelligent Load Management System. you have these specialized components that we installed on the machine, and really what they do is they produce an artificial load onto the diesel engine. And adding this extra load really just takes the heat that the engine produces, it takes the heat it passes the heat downstream to the exhaust component which are new for the Tier IV Final emissions and that’s where you get your benefit. You’re taking the heat from the components that we’ve installed on the machine, you add heat to the engine, heat to the exhaust, increasing the entire heat to the system and preventing any unwanted failures or machine shutdown and really just from an end user standpoint prevents downtime on the machine.”

George notes that the ILMS significantly cuts costs.

“So, you’re not having to swap out equipment, you’re not having to pay fines because your equipment doesn’t work on the jobsite,” he says. “It’s just a reassurance for the customer that their machine will meet any requirements on any jobsite. So many of the machines that are used in the rental industry and once the machine is dropped off to the end user, sometimes it’s unknown how it’s going to be used. Again, just kind of a failsafe for some of our customers, they can offer this solution and not have to worry about the product on the jobsite.”

         Already the option is generating inquiries and a lot of interest in DPP’s customers, especially during the winter, although it is being used everywhere from the Arizona deserts to northern Canada in the winter.

“We have inquiries all the time, and that only increases during the wintertime, during cold weather because the Tier IV Final emission problem, the wet stacking, is magnified during the wintertime when it’s cold outside,” George says. “All of our customer base has a need for it and the rental industry is a huge driver for that.”

         The “intelligent” aspect of the solution is a big benefit, George says.

         “Some of our competitors have solutions out there that will put an artificial load on the engine, but it’s always there, you have to manually turn it off, he says. “It’s always consuming some fuel. Whereas our system, since it’s intelligent, it’s able to pick up when it’s needed, it can turn on and off, it can vary the load so it can run at 25 percent load, 50 percent load. It’s smart and can save the end user some fuel when it’s not needed.”

         George says the cost of the ILMS can essentially pay for itself by reduced service technician trips to jobsites, especially those in remote areas.
