Heavy construction, quarry and mining truck maker Hitachi Construction Truck Manufacturing Ltd. this week announced plans to invest CAD $33 million (about U.S. $32.2 million) to double its production capacity over the next three years. The expanded facility will increase from 20,000 square meters to 33,000 square meters.

The company, which has North American headquarters in Guelph, Ontario, is the sole supplier of Hitachi mining dump trucks in North America, South America, and parts of Europe and Asia. Its plant in Guelph also produces parts to service its vehicles.

In addition, the company received a CAD $6.6 million (U.S. $6.4 million) repayable contribution from the federal Prosperity Initiative to assist with funding the expansion, which is expected to create more than 240 additional jobs at the plant.

Hitachi will also used the funding to purchase technologically advanced equipment, open a manufacturing testing center and launch a new line of Japanese-designed trucks.
