Sept. 7, 2019
Aggreko, the world-leading provider of mobile modular power, temperature control and energy services, is preparing to power this year’s Solheim Cup, which tees off at Gleneagles on September 9.

Aggreko, the world-leading provider of mobile modular power, temperature control and energy services, is preparing to power this year’s Solheim Cup, which tees off at Gleneagles on September 9.

The Solheim Cup is the world’s premier women’s golfing event. Set this month in Perthshire, Scotland, the Cup features top women professional golfers, and is set to be one of the most high-profile events in the 2019 sporting calendar. Launched in 1990, this year is the 16th biennial contest which sees teams of top female golfers from North America and Europe go head-to-head over three days to claim the Cup.

Aggreko is deploying generators and temperature control equipment at this year’s event. Aggreko is no stranger to women’s sporting events, having powered the Women’s Tennis Association Final Singapore in 2014 and the 2015 Women’s World Cup Broadcast.

Working with the organizers of the Solheim Cup, Aggreko will be responsible for providing power and temperature control at the event, which is expected to draw over 100,000 spectators. The company will deploy:

  • 51 thermal generators
  • Two solar-battery hybrid modules
  • 19 chillers

This equipment will be supported by:

  • 33 km of cable
  • 242 distribution boards
  • 35 fuel tanks

Overall, Aggreko will provide 7.6 MW of electricity and 2.1MW of cooling to the Gleneagles complex over the course of the competition.

Robert Wells, managing director of Aggreko Events Services, said: “The Solheim Cup is set to be one of the biggest sporting events of the year, and all of Aggreko’s expertise and experience will be brought to bear to ensure that it runs smoothly. There is no bigger stage for us than these global sporting events which the world is watching, and we look forward to the challenge of delivering the highest-quality service to the Solheim Cup, ensuring a constant, high-quality supply of electricity and temperature control across the event. We’re also delighted to be deploying two solar-battery hybrid units, helping the Solheim Cup to cut its emissions footprint.”

Aggreko will also sponsor Mel Reid, the English professional golfer and vice-captain of Team Europe at this year’s Solheim Cup. She is a six-time winner in the Ladies European Tour since turning professional in 2007.

Robert Wells said of the partnership with Mel Reid: “At Aggreko we do things with a passion that sets us apart and that, to me, is the perfect way to describe why The Solheim Cup is such a very special event. Mel’s passion both on and off the course is also what made her stand out to us as the perfect ambassador to represent Aggreko at what we believe will be one of the biggest sporting events of the year.”

Aggreko is also working to reduce the carbon impact of this year’s tournament through the deployment of two solar-battery hybrid generators which incorporate two solar systems. Reid has witnessed how golfing competitions have become more conscious of their environmental impact through the course of her career, saying that “the golfing world is taking note of being more environmentally friendly.” Aggreko looks forward to working with the Solheim Cup organizers to help reduce their environmental impact.
