Delta Rigging & Tools, a division of Chicago-based Rental Holdings and a leading provider of wire rope, rigging and lifting equipment, last week acquired Coastal Wire Rope & Supply Inc., Houma, La. The acquisition is the fifth in the last three years by Delta Rigging & Tools.

Founded in 1991, Coastal manufactures and distributes a variety of wire rope and rigging products, including wire rope, slings, cordage and rigging hardware, to Gulf Coast customers in the oil and gas industries. One of the few providers of high-capacity wire rope slings up to 3.5 inches in diameter, Coastal Wire Rope & Supply also has built a strong reputation for service, typically providing same-day turnaround on slings, rigging hardware and sling testing. Coastal employs approximately 40 full-time employees at its Houma facility and all are expected to stay on under the new ownership.

“Delta Rigging & Tools’ goal is to be the one-stop resource for large industrial users that want to buy or rent rigging and lifting equipment or need a high-quality provider of inspection and repair services,” said Kevin Rodgers, Delta CEO. “Coastal Wire Rope & Supply strengthens our commitment on all fronts. The company is very highly regarded, deepens our penetration into South Louisiana and in the offshore market, and brings a new specialty product to our line — large-diameter wire rope slings.”

Coastal founders Kurt Charpentier and Tommy Dyson will remain with the company. “We look forward to taking our business to the next level,” Charpentier said.

In addition to oil and gas, Delta Rigging & Tools serves a variety of niche industrial industries including utility, power plant, mining, aerospace, shipyard and chemical, marine, petrochemical, construction, timber and transport markets. Typical applications include plant shutdowns and turnarounds, plant maintenance, inspection, testing and repairs.

Delta Rigging & Tools operates out of eight branches: Brazoria, El Paso and Fort Worth, Texas; and Baton Rouge, Lafayette, New Iberia, Sulphur and now Houma, La. Delta also has branches in Atlanta and Columbus, Ohio, with corporate headquarters in Lake Jackson, Texas. The company is a national leader in the sale, rental and servicing of industrial hoisting, rigging and tooling equipment and it comprised of five companies that merged in January: Delta Wire Rope; Industrial Hoist; American Sling Co.; Port Rentals; and BB&H Air Tools.

“Rigging is basically a lifting solution below the hook, versus the business we originally started with Industrial Hoist, which I think of as lifting equipment above the hook,” Rodgers told RER. “We’ve bought three companies on the lifting side of things and now this is the third company we’ve bought that does below the hook, the rigging side of the business. It’s a nice combination and we’ve seen some better-than-expected cross-selling opportunities by putting these companies together.”

Parent company Rental Holdings is No. 64 on the RER 100.
